Tarifa, located on the Straight of Gibraltar, is the "windsurfers" mecca. The winds which predominate in Tarifa are called "Poniente" and "Levante" . These favourable wind conditions attract windsurfers from all over the world. The main objective whilst practising this spectacular sport is to be capable of dominating the waves and the wind and to enjoy to the maximum the feeling of "surf" and speed.

Horseback riding  
and outdoor activities
Horse riding has a long tradition in Andalusia. Decorated horses take part in all kinds of festivities. A highlight in Tarifa is the annual Cabalgata (with approx. 500 horses) which starts the feria week in September. Enjoy excursions along the most beautiful beaches in Tarifa during the week and to the nearby national park "Los Alcornocales", with beautiful views to the African continent, during weekends.

Climbing  
Rock climbing in the National Park of San Bartolomé will give you the bonus of marvellous views of the Straight of Gibraltar, the Moroccan coastline as well as of the countryside of Tarifa. Something very exciting which should not be missed is the monthly moonlight climbing (providing weather conditions are good) with a snack. This is organised by the organiser of the climbing classes. The climbing location is in Betis, which has the advantage that it is sheltered from the winds and that there is a good choice for climbing either in the sun or in the shade.

On the contrary, the rocky Mediterranean coast has plenty of underwater life on offer and differs from the Atlantic, where yet again, other species of flora and marine fauna can be observed.

Whale watching  
Three types of dolphins can be observed here: the common-, striped and bottlenose dolphin. These cetaceans together with the pilot whale, live, as far as is known, in the Strait throughout the year. Fin whale and sperm whale travel through the straight at certain times to lay the eggs in the Mediterranean. The orca passes here during July and August. These are all open sea boat excursions and this is a great possibility to observe them in their natural environment. The boat rides take you near the African continent, which gives you, on a clear day, breathtaking views.
